Gratitude, and your blog.

I would like to thank you, many of you, for your blog posts regarding our shipping structure change. All that really changed was the minimum for free shipping, the low rates for smaller orders didn't get altered much. I really appreciate the kind words and support. If you've been "around" a while, you know that I detest raising prices, so I had put this off for many months.

Along those lines, I wanted to spotlight a few bloggers as I've done in the past. As much as we appreciate all of you, I'm going to post some newer links that I haven't before. Some I just came across in the past few days. Hopefully I'll remember to come back here and post more later in the week, and if you have suggestions, feel free to share in the comments, including your own. These blogs obviously feature other brands as well, especially Indies. You lovelies are what keep us all going.

Cosmetics and Cats: Vivid photos with swatches and reviews.

Sparkling Luna: Gorgeous EOTDs, crisp product photos.

Cinseven13: Many swatch photos and lovely looks.

Makeup Musings: Have I mentioned Kelley before? Stunning looks and video tutorials.

Chikarina: (in German) Creative looks and videos, reviews and vivid product photos.

Stay Beautiful: Lovely, versatile looks and swatches.

That's all for now, more next time. Love you everyone!

Quick note regarding shipping changes

I did increase the free shipping amount  today after wanting to do so for months, because over the past few years, offering free shipping on all orders over such a low amount ends up being very costly. You may have seen when my chemist 'tweeted' that October's USPS totals were more than what he makes in a month, which was true. The fall is always our busiest time of the year, and September and October saw three times the order volume of last year at that time. Of course I needn't explain a reason for the change, but I prefer to let our clientelle know what's going on when major changes are made. The low postage rates are still there for orders under $40. It is as follows:

Small orders have low rates: Shipping cost for US orders under $40 is from $1.75 to $3.00 (First class).

Shipping cost for orders under $40 to Canada is from $2.25 to $3.25.

Shipping cost for orders under $40 to all other worldwide destinations is from $2.75 to $4.00.

Thank you for your continued patronage and support. We love you!

Gel primer containers

Look like at the end of next week the primer will be available in a larger size - a little over .75oz instead of .50oz, and it will be in plastic flip cap cosmetic bottles. They're white (ugh), and should be better for travel and longer-term storage.

The importance of Beauty Bloggers: A cosmetic company's perspective

If you're reading this, you probably also read beauty blogs or write one. You also know that there is a wide array to choose from, from blogs that give reviews and photos of a broad range of cosmetics, to quite a few that specialise in reviews of certain product types such as skincare, nail polish, or lipstick. Some of these bloggers are devoted and passionate about the products, whether they're in the industry or just love makeup. For the most part, you can count on real reviews and photos, usually applied or swatched to give you a better idea of the product. In the United States, by law a blogger must state if they received a product as a gift or free for reviewing purposes, but this doesn't detract from companies sending products to well-known blog owners. Some people may see this as a negative aspect, but it allows more products to be tried and reviewed that the writer may not have previously known about or had in interest in. Most of the time, the bloggers purchase their own products, and many are professional makeup artists with rather impressive collections. None of this is news, and these bloggers have been utilised by stores, manufacturers, and trade shows. However, people are often surprised when informed of just how much impact the blogs and videos can have, even the reviewers themselves.

The majority of beauty blogs have one important factor in common: they are an invaluable resource for not only consumers, but cosmetic stores and manufacturers. This is somewhat obvious, otherwise companies would not be so anxious to send the goods, but sometimes just a single review on a well-known blog can completely alter the sales pattern on a single product.

As an example, two eye shadow shades from the company I work at that were recently used together by a blogger who also posts tutorials on Youtube. Both shades did well by themselves, one being a top seller. Upon seeing each colour, most people, myself included, would not think to think to pair them. However, her use of the colours was executed so well that they paired perfectly. The day after that look was posted, several people bought the two shades, most of these being new customers. Our top-seller has been reviewed by quite a few well-known bloggers over the past year, plus many smaller beauty blogs, which is exactly how it got to be such a fast moving product. Some budding Indie companies have been bounced into the public eye by popular blogs, often because the smaller companies have the ability to change according to customer wants and needs. That's not to say larger companies don't take the same approach, although they're not usually as able to do so on such an individual basis.

Of course slow sales are often a determining factor in product discontinuations, and sometimes a blogger will review a product that the manufacturer was considering halting production on. If the blogger reviews it favourably, and demand increases, the chance is greater that it won't be discontinued. This usually applies to smaller or Indie companies rather than large corporations.Sometimes in the wide world of cosmetics, a blogger reviews a product and finds a major flaw with it in some way. Often, numerous readers will comment that they, too had this problem or disliked that feature. Such a post and subsequent comments can sometimes be brought to the attention of the company, either directly or via search engine if they track customer response, as many do. There's a good chance that the manufacturer of such a product is unable or unwilling to change the design or formulation, but quite often they will. Sometimes a product tested well, but when used by many people, a large enough number complained of a skin reaction, faulty dispenser, etcetera.

In-depth skincare reviews are especially helpful, as so many people have sensitive, acne-prone, overly oily, or chronically dry skin. After years of trying countless products that just aggrivate the skin, it's fairly easy to find bloggers that have the same or similar issues and check out the products they recommend, while not bothering with the ones they couldn't wash off fast enough.

Beauty blogging is a fairly recent trend, but its impact on the cosmetic market goes far beyond pictures of shopping bags and lipgloss.

Long, long day and it's only half over

Last night I changed the header images over to reflect the new font. Not a big deal in itself, but you will see orders containing a mix of the old font & the new for the next couple weeks, since I'm not about to just throw out hundreds and hundreds of product labels. The styles are similar enough that it's not a monumental change.

Yes the site is currently down for a couple hours because we're moving to a new host and server, which I will refrain from going into further detail about yet. It's a major change, though hopefully the nameservers don't take more than 2-4 hours to reflect it. It was around that last time.

Here we go

  • Shadow Full Size (e/s is about 1.25 to 1.5 tsp) - $5.90 (was 5.25)
  • Shadow Mini (sample)  - 1/3tsp = $2 (was $1.75 for 1/4tsp)
  • Arcane Shadow Full Size - $6.35 (was $5.95)
  • Arcane Shadow Mini  - 1/4tsp = $2 (was $1.75 for 1/8tsp  -see, twice as much for .25 more)
  • City Glam Mini - 1/4tsp =$2 (was $1.75 for 1/8tsp. Full size price did not increase)
  • Fluff - reduced in price by .50 (not including sample)
  • Pixie Epoxy - reduced in price by .50 (not including sample)

Buying 3 Mini shadows does not equal a full size amount though. Shadow jars are packed down, and have about one and a quarter to one and a half teaspoons of shadow.

We did not change jar sizes or styles. On my way to edit photos of the "new" shades that have been promised since January. Please email if you have any questions or if we majorly messed up something. staff@fyrinnae dot com , no spaces of course.

Changing

Of course many people are not the least bit happy about a price change. Yet it has to be either that or ditch the free shipping. I pay out quite a hefty amount to the postal service each week: an average $25-$30 overseas order costs about $4-$6 to send. By contrast, the same for domestic is around $2-$2.60.

An announcement

It has been decided.  (cue doom music)

Prices and product sizes will change. Only on some things, and nothing very much. Sizes will not go down. This is very difficult for me to do. We have lowered prices on several products over the years, but I just have to face the fact that after leases, equipment, product ingredients and packaging, not to mention the postage costs, are paid, there is very little left to pay for those little things like food, clothing, mortgage.

The new shades won't be released until this is done, but we keep putting those off because of the constant high order volume, and when anything new comes out, it triples. Still haven't done photos of the new shades. I was planning to tend to that this weekend, but before I knew it, Sunday had arrived and we're preparing many shipments for tomorrow.
